Caribe - 7 days / 6 nights

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

slothcrossing.jpg

Nestled along the Caribbean coast of the country, the laid back town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca lies patiently in wait for the arrival of inspired travelers. The eclectic region is home to a diverse array of wildlife harbored by white sand beaches, lush tropical rainforest, and a community oriented towards preservation of its natural resources.  Puerto Viejo is a place like no other that we have encountered, a unique combination of natural paradise and diverse culture producing an energy that can only be described as 'pura vida'.

Join us for seven unforgettable days in 'el Caribe' of Costa Rica with snorkeling, yoga, and nature hikes providing opportunities to see sloths, monkeys, and parrots along the way. We'll learn about indigenous culture, participate in a volunteer project, and dine on the finest rice & beans in coconut milk the region has to offer! Puerto Viejo is a destination that continues to call us back, long after our first visit nearly 20 years ago, and we're confident it will do the same for visitors who open their hearts and minds to this magical place.

Day 1

Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival in the capital of San Jose, private transport will take you to the small town of Puerto Viejo nestled along the caribbean coast of the country.  Check in to your hotel, unpack and introduce yourself to fellow travelers before dinner in town. After local cuisine and drinks turn in for a good nights rest in anticipation of the week to come.

Day 2

Rise with the sun and join the group for a 'puerto fresh' breakfast of fruits, cheese, juice, and coffee direct from the local landscape. After breakfast, clear your mind, focus and center yourself with a group yoga session at OM.

With lazy palms, champagne sands, and forgiving waves, Playa Cocles is your playground for the day. Having found your balance earlier at OM, its time for a group surf lesson! Afterwards, go for a swim, explore the coast by land or sea (kayak), or take in the caribbean sun and a good book before dinner and an evening on the town!

Day 3

Wake up early and greet the sun with a walk or yoga on the beach before breakfast. Once nourished set out for an exciting day of activity. First learn about the history, importance, and pure goodness of cocoa to the region with a visit to a family run sustainable chocolate farm. Afterwards stop in on the Sloth Sanctuary to learn about efforts to rehabilitate, release, and preserve the species in the region. Don't leave without meeting long term resident Buttercup as well as baby sloths in the nursery!

Midday finds us in picturesque Cahuita National Park. Lead by your naturalist guide, hike through a unique coastal ecosystem with howler monkeys, sloths, and toucans in the rainforest canopy above.  The trail winds in and out of rainforest giving way to white sands and scenic views of the coast. After stopping for lunch, spend the rest of the afternoon on the beaches of Cahuita, soaking up the sun and swimming in the refreshing waters of the Caribbean before heading back to Puerto Viejo for dinner.

Day 4

Another day in paradise awaits as you wake to the song of rainforest, the warmth of the sun, and the opportunity to give back to our gracious hosts. The morning is spent delivering donated school supplies and participating in the cleanup of school grounds for a local institution in need of volunteer time and resources.

After lunch join members of the community for an organized beach cleanup followed by a humble tree planting ceremony. Celebrate the days efforts with a caribbean barbecue on the beach before retiring for the night.

Day 5

After breakfast your day begins in Manzanillo with a guided hike through Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge harbors a unique combination of rainforest, wetlands, and coral reef home to over 350 species of birds, sloths, golden eyelash vipers, caymen, sea turtles, as well as the ever-illusive tapir!

At the end of the trail we return by boat with hopes of seeing dolphins swimming off the coast. Back in Manzanillo, Maxi's restaurant is waiting with some of the finest cuisine on the coast; caribbean whole fish, rice & beans and an Imperial provide the perfect ending to a rewarding morning.

On the ride back, stop off at Punta Uva, one of the most spectacular beaches in the region. Towering rocks divide stretches of cinnamon sands, creating coves of emerald green and turquoise blue waters. Spend the afternoon enjoying the surf, sands, and a scenic sunset before making your way back to Puerto at days end.

The day closes with a group dinner, sharing unforgettable memories and confirming Facebook friends before some reggae and salsa dancing to end the night. Retire to your hotel and finish packing before succumbing to the lullaby of the rainforest one last time.
